Hello
Scientific inquiry!
Before diving into formulating hypotheses, collecting data, and analyzing results, we first need to define 'science' with our students. This is an opportunity to assess what students know about the scientific enterprise and use that as an opportunity to foster a sense of belonging, showing them that they are capable and have a place in this field.
Defining Science
Students critically examine the concept of science by engaging in an imaginative scenario that challenges their ability to define scientific ideas for an external observer. This is an opportunity for students to reflect on how personal and cultural backgrounds shape their understanding of science.
Who Does Science?
Science is for everyone! This lesson shows that science is strengthened by diversity and inclusion. By expanding who “counts” as a scientist, students can better recognize their own potential to contribute to scientific work and appreciate the role of community, identity, and equity in shaping scientific progress.
ML & AI in Science
This lesson provides an accessible and fun starting point for students to gain a basic understanding of how artificial intelligence and machine learning work and how these technologies are already part of their daily lives. By using Google’s Teachable Machine to detect dance moves, students explore how machine learning recognizes patterns in data and makes predictions.
